First Landowners in Floyd County, Virginia
From the patents, grants, deeds, and surveys of Fincastle, Botetourt, Montgomery and Floyd counties
One of my earliest memories of researching my family history is with my uncle Lee Hylton. I vividly remember being at my grandparents’ house when I was about 10 years old and Lee printing a copy of our family tree, explaining how his parents shared a common ancestor… making them cousins (my first introduction to endogamy!).
Over the years, Lee’s research has expanded beyond our family. He recently created a map of the original landowners in Floyd County, Virginia, which was a massive undertaking. In 2023, he presented his work at a Floyd County Historical Society meeting, which was recorded and published on YouTube. The topics he covered include:
Foundation of Floyd County
Process of acquiring land
Metes and bounds - How to read surveys
Finding land records
Creating the first landowners map
Old place names in Floyd County
Non-resident land owners
Q&A with the audience
How to order the First Landowners in Floyd County map
Want to buy the map? The Floyd County Historical Society sells the polyvinyl-backed map in two sizes: 24” x 24” and 36” x 36” - order a copy of the map here. It makes a great addition to any office!
This photo was taken in September 2021 when my mom and I visited the Floyd County Historical Society.
